Welcome to the Indianapolis Poodle
Rescue (IPR) Board Page
Handi Skorich - President
Handi with 3
rescue poodles, Marcus, Chip and Dale
Handi is the owner of "Shear
Magic" grooming and boarding. She received her BA in Human
Relations (psych, soc, and anthropology) from Judson College
(Elgin IL) in 1981. Her Masters work (in progress) in Counseling
Psychology was at Ball State University. She worked as a social
worker, dealing with "at risk" individuals for over 18 years.
She has bread numerous champion
collies and miniature poodles (Riverspirit Kennels) over the
past 20 years. Her dogs have obtained numerous titles in the
following categories: Hearding, Obedience, Therapy, and
Championship (approximately 35 individual titles).
Her first poodle, Freddie,
received the "DOG WORLD" award on two occasions.
Handi is a member of the Poodle
Club of Central Indiana and Indiana Collie Club. She and her
partner, Grace, have two standard and three miniature poodles
that live in their home. She began IPR in 1997 when she began to
see a growing need for such and organization. Since that time,
what is now known as Indianapolis Poodle Rescue has rescued and
placed more than 500 poodles.
Harlan L Higgins, Ph.D., Vice President
Dr
Higgins is a psychologist is
private practice
on the Northside of
Indianapolis.
He has been a resident of
Indianapolis
since 1986. Prior to that time he resided in Miami,
Florida.
Originally Harlan was from rural
upstate New York,
where he grew up with his first dog; an
Irish Setter
named Duke. At age 10 his father entrusted him with
raising Buster, his first puppy, a beagle.
Harlan has fond memories both of his childhood and
times spent roaming the great outdoors of
upstate New York.
As part of leaving his hometown he bade a sad farewell to his
two
canine companions.
He would have numerous other canine companions over the years,
however, it was not until 2005 that he took up the challenge of
raising another puppy.
And this was the puppy (now dog) to end all dogs.
Fortunately, Henry, true to his breed and personal heritage, has
turned out to be the smartest, most people orientated and best
natured dog anyone could hope for as a companion. There
have been many blessings that have come out of Dr Higgins'
decision to choose a poodle out of the several breeds he
had considered. Not the least of those blessings is his
affiliation with
Indianapolis Poodle Rescue
and the wonderful people involved in this important community
service organization.
Dr. Higgins believes it would be a far better world if
more people were involved in raising and caring for poodles.
